Excel and registers vs a temple suite

Most temple offices run on a receipt book, a seva (temple service) register and a spreadsheet someone built years ago. Here is what that does well, where it breaks, and what changes with software.

Is Excel enough for a temple?

Excel and paper registers are enough for a small temple with one counter, a handful of receipts a day, no online payments and one trusted person keeping the books. They start to fail when there are several counters, UPI and gateway payments to match with the bank, yearly sevas to schedule by tithi, or trustees who want reports. A temple suite such as SwaDharma gives every booking a numbered receipt, controls who sees what, and keeps an audit trail.

What changes when the registers move into software

Each row is a real job in the temple office. The right-hand column names the SwaDharma product that does it today.

Be honest

When Excel and a register are enough

If every line below describes your temple, you probably don’t need software yet. Keep the register, and use our free tools.

One counter, one person

A single receipt book, written by one trusted person who also does the deposit.

Mostly cash

No temple website, no payment gateway, and few UPI payments to match with the bank.

No yearly seva schedule

No perpetual sevas that must fall on a tithi or nakshatra every year.

Your accountant is happy

Your chartered accountant gets what they need for the audit without a scramble.

Signs you’ve outgrown it

When the registers start costing more than software

More than one counter

Receipt books at two counters, the website and an utsav (festival) stall — and nobody can say today’s total.

Online money to reconcile

Gateway and UPI payments arrive in the bank net of fees, and someone matches them by hand.

Missed Shashvat sevas

A devotee calls to ask why their family’s yearly puja was not performed on the right tithi.

Trustees want reports

Collections by seva, by day and by payment mode — before the meeting, not after.

Audit questions

Gaps in receipt numbers, corrections with no reason, cash that doesn’t match the book.

A devotee list you can’t use

Thousands of names across sheets, with no way to find a family’s history at the counter.

Yes. We import your paper Shashvat Seva register into Netra, and each perpetual seva is then scheduled on its tithi or nakshatra using your temple’s own Panchang.

Can I get my data back into Excel later?

Yes. Netra’s reports export to Excel, PDF and CSV, and Tally XML for your accountant. Your data stays yours.
