Can a temple run on Tally alone?
Tally is where most temple accounts end up, and for good reason. This page is about everything that happens before a voucher reaches it — and how to connect the two.
Short answer
A temple can keep its books in Tally — ledgers, vouchers, GST and financial statements — and many temple accountants do. Tally is not built for the temple’s front office: seva and puja (temple service and worship) bookings, counter receipts with gotra and nakshatra (family lineage and birth star), darshan tickets, dharmashala (pilgrim lodging) room and hall bookings, or a devotee register. Most temples run those in front-office software and send vouchers to Tally. Netra exports Tally XML vouchers, and Kshetra has a Tally export.

What Tally does well for a temple
If your accountant already works in Tally, keep it. Nothing on this page asks you to replace it.
Double-entry books
Ledgers, groups and vouchers for a trust’s income, expenses, funds and assets.
GST
GST on taxable supplies such as hall rent or shop leases, where the trust is registered.
Year-end statements
Trial balance, income and expenditure account and balance sheet for the auditor.
Familiar to CAs
Chartered accountants and audit teams across India already know how to work with it.
The gap
What a temple needs beyond the ledger
These jobs happen at the counter, the reception desk and the store — before anything is an accounting entry.
| What the temple needs | Tally alone | With SwaDharma feeding Tally |
|---|---|---|
| Seva and puja bookings at the counter | Not part of standard Tally; recorded later as a receipt voucher. | Netra three-lane counter for puja, donation and darshan ticket, one receipt per family. |
| Receipts with devotee details | A receipt voucher has a party name, not gotra, nakshatra or “in memory of”. | Netra’s 37 configurable devotee fields printed on numbered, immutable receipts with a QR code. |
| Darshan tickets with time slots | Not part of standard Tally. | Netra tickets with slot capacity and included laddu or vastram, verified by QR at the gate. |
| Shashvat Seva by tithi (lunar date) | Not part of standard Tally. | Netra schedules perpetual sevas from your temple’s own Panchang. |
| Website and kiosk payments | Entered from the bank statement after the fact. | Netra website and kiosk receipts land in the same ledger as the counter. |
| Gateway settlements | Matched by hand against fees and net credits. | Netra matches gateway settlements automatically and reconciles cheque, NEFT and POS deposits. |
| Dharmashala rooms and halls | Not part of standard Tally. | Kshetra handles rooms, dormitory beds and halls, with its own daybook, contra entries, GST summary and Tally export. |
| Stores, prasadam (consecrated food) and jewellery | Stock items exist, but not committee approvals or two-person custody. | Inventory adds M-of-N committee approvals, an append-only stock ledger and a jewellery register. |
| Counter-level permissions | Users and security levels for accounting staff. | Netra’s counter operators see only their own counter’s collections. |
How the hand-over works
Netra and Kshetra send vouchers to Tally — your accountant stays in Tally
In Netra, Tally Manager maps Netra’s accounts and payment modes to your Tally ledgers once. After that, collections export as Tally XML vouchers that your accountant imports into Tally. Kshetra’s accounting module keeps bank and cash accounts, a passbook, contra entries, a daybook and a GST summary, with its own Tally export.
- Netra: ledger mapping and Tally XML voucher export from Tally Manager
- Netra: settlements reconcile what reached the bank before it reaches Tally
- Kshetra: daybook, contra entries, GST summary and Tally export for rooms and halls
- Reports also export to Excel, PDF and CSV

Expenses & Accounts for Netra
Netra is not a full accounting package today — that is why it exports to Tally. The next Netra module brings the expense side into the same system as receipts, and is being tested with early temples.
- Expense bills with photo evidence, vendors, payments and advances
- Fund accounting — general, restricted and corpus funds
- Cash book and bank book with reconciliation
- TDS and GST, maker–checker approval, month and year close
Is Tally enough for a small temple?
For the books, often yes. If the temple has one counter, mostly cash and no yearly seva schedule, Tally plus a receipt book can work. Once there are several counters, online payments or perpetual sevas, a front-office system saves the re-typing.
Does Netra replace Tally?
No. Netra handles bookings, receipts, devotees and settlements, and exports Tally XML vouchers so your accountant keeps the books in Tally. An Expenses & Accounts module for Netra is in early access.
How does Netra data get into Tally?
Tally Manager in Netra maps Netra’s accounts to your Tally ledgers, then exports vouchers as Tally XML for your accountant to import. Read temple accounting in Netra.
Does Kshetra work with Tally?
Yes. Kshetra’s accounting module — bank and cash accounts, passbook, contra entries, daybook and GST summary — includes a Tally export for room and hall income.
Can my chartered accountant keep using Tally?
Yes. That is the point of the export: the counter and reception work in SwaDharma, and the accountant receives vouchers in the Tally they already use. See for accountants.
Keep Tally. Stop re-typing receipts into it.
